Independence Day

Hiba Noor

“Others might have forgotten but never can I

for the flag of my country furls very high”

Green flags, badges and the said color balloons are the talk of town these days. Most of us have flagged cars, balconies etc, and of course we all have that green dress smiling at us in our closets. But don’t you ever wonder why is that we show our love for the country in August only? What really is Independence Day? And why do we celebrate it? One thing always bothers me on independence days. We all show nationalism and patriotism on the 14 th but the next day and the days that follow I have seen the same buntings and flags that are decorated with care, lying on the roads, all drenched in mud water. Why? Is celebrating the day by singing national songs and embellishing our homes and vehicles a way to pay for our ancestors’ sacrifices? I highly disagree.

Pakistan wasn’t made overnight, we lost lives, belongings, privileges and what not. Our heroes performed their duty and gave us the country now it is our responsibility to maintain its peace and make it the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The Quaid once said, “Pakistan not only means freedom and independence but the Muslim ideology which has to be preserved, which has come to us as a precious gift and treasure and which we hope others will share with us” Let us all vow to be good citizens from today and make our country and our leaders proud. May Allah protect Pakistan from all sorts of danger and shower the country with happiness and prosperity. Happy Independence!

Pakistan Zindabad!
